One Week to Fairtrade Fortnight

Saturday, 30 April 2011

May 7th to May 22nd is Fairtrade Fortnight. It’s the time to Show off your Swap to Fairtrade, get some really Good Mother’s Day gifts and help spread the word about how Fairtrade is helping people out of poverty all over the world.

Fairtrade Fortnight is a time when the Fairtrade Association (FTAANZ) asks us all to think all things Fairtrade. This year the focus is on “Show off your swap” – encouraging people to talk about their swap to Fairtrade, and encouraging others to do the same.

The Fairtrade label tells you that the product you are buying has come from a supply chain where producers have fair trading conditions. That is they are given a fair price for their goods and their work. In addition, the Fairtrade movement provides additional funds to producer communities to help with education, training and development. This enables producers to take charge of their own destiny, find a way out of poverty and build a future for themselves and their families.

Celebrating with your family over Easter, you may have already swapped to Fairtrade chocolate Easter eggs. Coffee, sugar, tea and cotton are all available Fairtrade – swapping your regular coffee purchase to a Fairtrade brand is easy, there is a list of brands here, and is great way to be a part of Fairtrade Fortnight.

If you want to really get involved – there’s plenty more you can do. There is a list of events on the Fairtrade Fortnight website, including the launch of Fair Traders of Australia at the Manly Fair Trade Market in Sydney, on Saturday 7 May. You can enter a competition with a photo of you to ‘Show off your Swap’ and win some great Fairtrade prizes.

But the real prize is the impact you are having. It is real, and it is big - five million people around the world directly benefit from Fairtrade.

Be a part of it. Its fun, its Good, and the coffee is great.
