In Search of the Perfect Notebook

What makes the perfect notebook?

I like to write – I mean really write, not type into a screen. And I like to write with a nice pen, on nice paper – which I like to have handy all the time. So how do I, as an environmentally conscious lass, manage this?

Enter my Ask Alice notebook. It fits nicely into my handbag. Things that hang about in my handbag tend to get more than a little scruffy. My notebook has a great little holder that keeps the pages together and tidy, and is easy to slip on and off. It has blank pages – which I really like so I can go crazy and do mindmaps and doodle to my hearts content. It’s cute and stylish, without being cutesy, so that I can unobtrusively pull it out in the cafĂ© and feel that it compliments my outfit. The paper is smooth and easy to write on.

Easy to write on is a quality I have found lacking in other environmentally friendly notebooks. Handmade or recycled paper can often be a bit bumpy or overly absorbent, so that when you write it drives you crazy and you end up being more focused on trying to not get your pen caught in the bumps than on what you are trying to write. Not so with this little gem. I can write away in bliss knowing that my notebook is made from recycled papers, manufactured in Melbourne and printed with dyes made from vegetables. It’s as guilt free as paper can get.

You can get your own Ask Alice notebook from http://www.askalicestationery.com/. I actually found mine by chance at Gleebooks (ah – one of my favourite places Earth). As with all things quality, Ask Alice notebooks are not super cheap - AU$18 – but for me definitely worth it. You’ll find a bunch of other gorgeous paper things on their website, including gift tags and envelopes.

Blissful stress free writing – on paper. Perfect.
